Screen Shot 2016-07-05 at 9.17.39 PMContent marketers have a lot to learn from journalists and vice versa (even though both groups don’t want to always admit this). In our recent #CMWorld Twitter chat, we were joined by Cameron Conaway, journalist and content marketing manager at Flow, who has experience in both these worlds. He led a conversation that offered ideas on how journalists can transition to content marketing.

A few highlights of the chat are below. Visit this week’s Storify for even more great conversations on this topic.

So – what are some differences between journalism and content marketing?

@CMIContent A1 Journalism has an expectation of objectivity, while content marketing has the brand’s interest at heart.  #cmworld

A1: content marketing is content produced to achieve corporate goals, jounalism is a source of news with no corporate agenda #CMWorld

A1: At its purest, #journalism is public service. No funnels, mad hustle, big hearts, little strategy beyond creation—>publication. #CMWorld

And even with these differences, what are we able to learn from both?

A8 It’s a waste of time unless it’s helpful, relevant, credible, and engaging. #CMWorld

A8: From #journalism we can learn how #empathy serves story. From #contentmarketing we can learn how empathy serves audience. #CMWorld

A8: Good writing is good writing, no matter what label you apply to it! #cmworld https://t.co/7cIDvefuBw
